A Complete Web Workflow from Beginning to End

Welcome to my first web design and development video tutorial series and it’s FREE, this series covers a complete web design build and workflow that I’ve built and adapted over the past few years keeping it up to date with the latest technologies.

The series is aimed at the web designer/developer who already has a solid understanding of the basics of development, and are now looking to gain some extra tips and speed up their whole process.

This episode outlines the software and settings that I use generally, my preferred Sublime Text packages and why I use them.
I skip all the boring installation that most web tutorials go into, as the process changes so often I find it pointless. Just head over to the relevant website and follow the installation instructions there.

I quickly create the necessary basic files and folders required for our web project, using SASS and CodeKit together.

Episode #4 – Building the Home Page Part 1

We start to layout our home page HTML using Sublime Text, setup our SASS variables, and create the basic site header and footer.

This episode see’s us mostly wrap up the homepage design elements, with thought going into the best process to create the repeating elements in a way that will save us both time and coding (HTML/CSS), knowing that we will be using a PHP logic to handle most of any code repetition.

This video features getting the project setup on a local host, exporting and modularising our content into includable parts. Using a very nice PHP loop to generate our HTML content and more. Also covers using Sublime Text snippets for quickly writing code we use often.

In this video I show how I quickly build a static About me page, with focus on typography. Then we go on to create a contact form combining PHP and AJAX (jQuery) technologies for a smooth and responsive contact form.

This video covers getting a very nice blog system setup that is tailor made to this kind of project. Using a simple flat JSON based CMS, without any need for a database.

Episode #10 – Putting the Site Live with Hosting and Git Version Control

We put the site LIVE! We configure Transmit (FTP) to our production server, upload our files and perform some basic tests. We then get our website development on git (Version control) so that we can track changes.

There are hundreds of tweaks that you can do in order to speed up your site, make it more secure and just generally make it a more rounded site. This video covers my most common tweaks, such as using PHP snippets, .htaccess tweaks and fun little files you can add to your server to give it the finishing touch. Includes basic SEO and Google Webmasters setup configurations. All those extra little steps that most people don’t remember, know about etc!
